Spiral Genetics collaborates with Microsoft to bring powerful bioinformatics technology to Microsoft Azure

Working closely with Microsoft as a US Startup Partner, Spiral Genetics, Inc. has deployed the BioGraph™ Suite, a powerful set of tools for the management and analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) genetic data, on Microsoft’s cloud platform, Azure.

In April a beta release of the BioGraph Suite on Microsoft Azure will be provided for hands-on experimentation and review. A number of general purpose queries will be released with it, as well as a powerful API that allows users to write queries to analyze data according to their own scientific questions.


What differentiates the Spiral Genetics tool suite from other bioinformatics tools?

The Spiral Genetics tool suite can execute a spectrum of queries hundreds of times faster than alternative technologies. These queries range from finding all the read evidence for a specific variant in an individual sample, to directly comparing entire populations of genomes to identify all variants that are frequent in one population and rare in another. It also enables all sequence information in an individual genome to be stored in under 3 gigabytes, over 30 times more compact than conventional methods.


What does Microsoft Azure add to the solution?

Microsoft Azure provides reliable and scalable compute resources with a selection of machine configurations that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, while offering enterprise-grade data security. It also provides high-speed on-ramp services, enterprise-level job management and continuous availability.

Adina Mangubat is the CEO of Spiral Genetics. Prior to founding Spiral Genetics, Ms. Mangubat worked with two other high-technology companies wherein her role included team development, brand development, marketing, channel development and sales for complex technologies. A graduate of the University of Washington, Ms. Mangubat holds a B.S. in Psychology and Entrepreneurship, and was recognized by the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association as one of the 2013 Women to Watch in Life Science. Additionally, Ms. Mangubat was featured in Forbes 2013 “30 under 30” for Science and Healthcare. Adina’s passion for world-changing technology, coupled with her adept entrepreneurial focus and clear team development skills have enabled her to bring the team at Spiral Genetics to the forefront of bioinformatics innovation.

Jeremy Bruestle is a software engineer, computer scientist, and entrepreneur with over 15 years of professional experience. Well known for prior works including the publication of Airsnort, a tool that revealed security flaws in early Wifi networks, and his work on a laser-based mosquito killer, Jeremy has an extensive background in distributed computing. Jeremy has five issued patents and specializes in bridging the gap between academic research and applied technology. Recent projects include a parallel processing engine for cellular image analysis and an advanced retinal imaging system, developed in conjunction with researchers at Indiana University.

Dr. Shekar has a PhD in statistical genetics from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Australia. He has worked in technology transfer, commercializing a number of life science technologies. He has also worked for an IT services company in Singapore and a Counsyl, the genetic testing company.

A Stanford Computer Scientist and Harvard MBA, Stephen Weyl was founder of several early stage software companies and served as an executive at Apple Computer, Ingres, IBM, and Japanese multinational, Ricoh Company, Ltd. He was drawn to Spiral Genetics by his deep interest in database technologies, and his expectation that Spiral’s indexing and data storage algorithms will be foundational for future biological database and knowledge base systems.
